At Berman & Asbel, LLP we represent fathers and mothers in complex paternity disputes. We understand that paternity issues can have a profound effect on our client’s life. Whether you are seeking to gain paternity recognition, to establish the paternity of another, or defending against a paternity accusation, our legal team will provide you with the representation you need.
In addition, we have successfully helped mothers establish paternity so they can obtain child support for day care, educational and medical costs.
How Do Paternity Tests Work?
Paternity tests are straightforward and painless, as is establishing paternity through legal acknowledgement:
- The test is used to evaluate DNA by scraping a few skin cells from a supposed father’s cheek and the cheek of the child. The samples are compared to determine whether there is a parentage match.
- A father not married to the mother of a child may sign the Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form, which will be placed on the child’s birth certificate. Once the man signs this, he has 60 days to rescind. Berman & Asbel, LLP has successfully represented putative fathers, even years after the signing, who had been duped into signing a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity.
- If the Acknowledgment of Paternity is allowed to stand, the putative father will be expected to pay child support, despite not being the real father.
